3-27-20 PDA provided updated guidance today for facilities, such as riding stables, that are responsible for the care and welfare of animals. Such facilities are also considered life-sustaining and may remain open for animal care. They are encouraged to follow PDA’s on farm guidance for preventing spread of COVID-19.

PA Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding stated, “we are not going to sacrifice animal welfare.” He further said that whatever is involved in caring for horses, including boarding facilities, is part of Ag and is life sustaining. Individual barn and horse owners should practice social distancing and other recommendations to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, but there is no need to prohibit horse owners from visiting their horses.

Livestock boarding and training facilities must make their own decisions as to whether to allow animal owners to visit.
